Organic Vegan Restaurant

Whilst we were staying in the quaint town of Hoi An we found an organic vegan restaurant. Well I say found, I was aware of it but could not read my own writing on the scrap of paper on which I’d scribbled the address so we ended up cycling over 20km looking for it because I “remembered” it was near the beach. Eventually we found it about 3 minutes away and just around the corner from where we were staying and nowhere near the beach much to Mr Y’s amusement, and he didn’t let me forget about that little cycling adventure in a hurry, still it was a pleasant way to spend the morning and a nice ride to the beach. anyway we found it and I have to say it wasn’t the most healthful lunch we had despite being vegan……

We ordered :

All that cycling was thirsty work

We were unfamiliar with knotgrass so we ordered this salad to share. The bread was different , hard and crisp and not soft and doughy.

Not the most healthful of dishes and we did share - a kind of pancake made from ground rice and turmeric and pan fried in oil. Tasted very very good though.

A dipping sauce for the banh xeo made from peanuts and soy beans I think

I only had a sip of the strong coffee!

….. but that’s because we ordered the dishes we were most curious to try.
Although there are many fried items,  there are a number of dishes on the menu that sounded suitable for a plant rich eating style . Most obvious is the green salad if you asked for the dressing on the side and the steamed vegetables. Some of the dishes served with red rice such as the vegetable curry or stew, the sweet n sour mushrooms & vegetables or the raw palace vegetables sounded promising and for afters the fruit plate. And if nothing on the menu tickles your taste buds  they can cater special vegan dishes upon request.

Left to right: the menu, the dish we ordered, sign on the counter

It is clearly stated in the menu that no msg, sugar or animal products are used but food is coked with a little onion, ginger, garlic and salt according to the customers taste, so as everything is freshly cooked we requested no salt. The kitchen is just behind the counter so we got to watch our meal being cooked as well.

The best part of the meal was the juice but perhaps that was because I was so thirsty. It was sugar free and very refreshing. The pancakes were scrumptious and surprisingly not overly greasy even though they had been fried in oil. They were served with plenty of green leaves and rice paper for rolling and the dipping sauce was delicious. I found the tofu in the knot grass salad to have a very interesting texture without being overly processed but it was much too salty for my taste buds so I ate only the green leaves (Mr Yum ate it all up though).
And the coffee was a treat.

Banana Blossom salad at Seasons of Hanoi Restaurant, Vietnam

This just happened to be the first dish we ordered when we arrived in Hanoi just in time for dinner.  And it was so delicious we ordered it whenever it was on a menu.  Each time it was always a little bit different but always very tasty.  This is  Mr Y’s interpretation:

Banana Blossom Salad

For the Salad
1 Banana flower
1 Spring onion, chopped
For the Dressing
 1 -2 red chilli,
 2 garlic cloves
A slither of galangal or ginger
 Juice from two fresh limes
White vinegar about 3 tablespoon or to qty to taste
Unrefined palm sugar/date sugar qty to taste
For the Garnish
 Crushed organic peanuts,unsalted
Remove the outer leaves/petals from the banana flower and discard along with the stringy bits. Slice remaining leaves/petals finely and add to serving dish together with the spring onion. To make the dressing pound the chilli, garlic and galangal in a pestle and mortar then add the lime juice and vinegar. It will be a bit bitter tasting so add a very small amount of palm or date sugar to balance and take away the bite. Pour over banana blossom and garnish with the peanuts.
I enjoyed!

Tonight's dinner, unpacked ready to wash and prepare

I was taking a shortcut through the wet market today when I saw banana flowers and got excited. We enjoyed a lot of these during our recent trip but I’ve never seen them here before, except quite high up on the banana trees. Of course I had to change the menu for tonight’s dinner. Then I had to get a load more produce and lug it all home up the hill. And the market was wetter than usual today as the clouds burst and I got drenched (it’s outside).
But it didn’t dampen my mood because I’m really looking forward to dinner this evening and pretending I’m still on vacation!
And talking of vacations, I love to visit the local food markets whenever I travel. I find them fascinating, just looking and watching and seeing the different produce available.  Even before I changed my food preferences to plant based I enjoyed exploreing the local markets although I do prefer looking at the fruit and vegetable sections now of course.

Everything's green!

Yum, green figs

No idea what these are, Snake Fruit perhaps.

Just have to figure out how to prepare banana flower now.
